Nestled along the Black Volta River in Ghana’s Upper West Region, the Wechiau Community Hippo Sanctuary (WCHS) is a living example of how communities, tradition, and conservation can coexist. This sanctuary protects one of only two remaining hippo populations in the country, preserves riverine forests and floodplain habitats, and supports livelihoods for 20 neighboring communities.
