Owabi Wildlife Sanctuary

Established in 1971, Owabi Wildlife Sanctuary spans 13 km², centering on a reservoir created to serve as Kumasi’s primary water source until 1971. It became Ghana’s only inland Ramsar Wetland Site in 1988 due to its ecological importance.

The sanctuary protects secondary and riverine forests, including plantations of Senna siamea trees alongside indigenous vegetation. It is now a key habitat for Mona monkeys, antelope, bush pigs, African civets, and over 161 bird species, including 13 listed under CITES Appendix II

Birdlife: 160+ species across 29 families; ideal for migratory & endemic birdwatchers. Key species: hornbills, herons, kites, cormorants.

Mammals: High chance of spotting Mona monkeys; antelopes, civets, bush pigs, bushbuckle. Reptiles like vipers and pythons may also be encountered.

Botanical Diversity: Over 199 plant species recorded including trees, climbers, ferns, shrubs; anchor for educational guided walks.

 

Activities & Visitor Experience

Guided Nature Walks: Explore forest trails including the bamboo canopy zone (known as the Bamboo Cathedral), and learn about native flora and fauna.

Birdwatching Tower: Use binoculars from an elevated vantage point overlooking the lake.

Canoe/Dam Tours: Glide across the calm water to see aquatic birds and riparian zones.

Picnic & Educational Sites: Ideal for school groups, church outings, and nature study events.
